October Update No 2

A highly enjoyable week on the water with Dutch anglers Frank van Vliet and Peter van Hoorn has come to an end. Some nice fish were boated including the two meter pike shown in our lats update and this cracking brown trout that took a liking to Franks lure. Of course the beauty was released again unharmed. It was more a case of quality instead of quantity as far as the fishing was concerned, as a lot of the pike caught were in the 80cm+ region.

Peter and Frank who also runs Dutch Predator angling website roofvisnet also showed off their skill and experience in Drop shot fishing and caught quite a few perch during the week. Perch which are highly underrated in Ireland can be great fun on light tackle and bring an interesting mix to a fishing trip here. Our new Mirrocraft boat and equipment is perfect for this style of fishing (vertical and Drop-shot) and we have all the gear and tackle you need to try it.

October update - New boats and big pike!

It has been hectic here at Angling Services Ireland over the past few weeks.
The new Mirrocraft boat has finally arrived and it took another week or so to fit engine, motor, electronics, etc. All had to be done in a hurry, because we wanted it ready for the arrival of Dutch Predator aces Frank van Fliet and Peter van Hoorn.
Frank and Peter arrived on Saturday and spend their first day fishing with us yesterday, when Frank landed a great pike of over one meter and well in the twenties. It measured 102cm.
Peter also took a nice fish.
Meanwhile last week we had Waterford anglers Stephen Butler and Joey O'Brien over for a days guided pike fishing. They had hoped to hook up any pike and would have been happy with a medium size pike. But when the pike suddenly becam active joey hooked up with something bigger and he promptly landed a nice pike measuring 102cm (~18lbs). Delighted with that he let the lure out again and was soon playing something that was even bigger. A few minutes later he had another cracking pike in the boat this time measuring 108cm (~25lbs).

End of Summer update - Start of pike season

The Pike fishing over the past few weeks here had already looked promising and sort of gave hope to an early start to good post summer piking.

This was confirmed yesterday when the German guest Volker Kliche hooked and landed the first pike over a meter after the Summer break (What summer?), during a days guided fishing with us.

Coincidentaly this was also Volkers first pike over the magic one meter mark. The pike was in great condition and measured 106cms/ 10kg. It was the biggest of seven pike he managed to land yesterday.

Unless we get an unexpected heat wave now, the pike fishing for the coming weeks and months looks promising.

Meanwhile the perch fishing is also pretty good right now, with some nice ones coming to Drop-shot and vertical jigging techniques.

New Guide boat nearly finished!

We were pleased to see that our new Guide-boat is now nearly finished and will soon be on it's way to us. Thanks to the good people at Mirrocraft, who sent us this sneak preview picture.
The boat should be here and fully fitted out before October all going well! So we will have it when the pike fishing kicks off again.
This state of the art fishing boat will finally provide ample space for our guided fishing trips for up to three clients and all equipment. It will be fully equipped with trolling motors, electronics, swivel seats, etc.
More news and info about our new and improved equipment and services are to follow soon...

August update

The fishing this August has been unusually good so far. Must have to do with the fact that we didn't really get any proper summer weather.

We had some nice trout both on fly and trolling over the past few weeks. Perch are absolutely everywhere right now and one can have great fun catching them on light tackle, and we even had quite a few pike over the weekend up to low double figures. Won't be long now til we start pike fishing proper again in September.

New boats, new waters!

It has long been our intention to get hold of some smaller and lighter boats to access some of those venues, where lakeboats can't be launched. Indeed many of our clients have asked in the past about fishing in some of those places...

We are pleased to announce that we have now added two Linder Alu-boats to our fleet for this purpose, which will open up new possibilities and new waters for our clients from now on.

We already know the potential of a number of smaller waters, and there is an abundance of venues that we will be test-fishing over the coming months...

By the way these boats are perfectly safe and very stable too, so they can be used on larger waters too.

Float tube pike!

An evenings fly-fishing for pike from float-tubes proved successful for fellow Boyle angler Paul Wynne when he hooked and landed himself a really nice pike on a small lake near Boyle. This was Pauls first time in a "Tube" and I think it wasn't the last! Well Done!

More pike!

The weather here is still pretty unsettled and not so much like summer at all, although this means that water temperatures in many lakes is still only around 15 degrees C and some good pike fishing is still to be had!
An evenings fly fishing for pike from float tubes with fellow Boyle angler and fly-fishing enthusiast Paul Wynne yielded some nice pike to low double figures with Paul getting the biggest of ~13lbs. thus providing spectacular sport.
This weekend gone we were guiding repeat client Graham Leonard and his friend Ray. The two Kildare anglers caught a number of fish to ~8.5lbs. and Guide Bodo Funke even sneaked out a good double as well.
A lot of fish hit the trolled lures on the day but somehow only ~a third of takes could be converted into fish in the boat (Total of 8 pike).

June update

Last weeks fishing here started of pretty good with pike to 1 meter for American angler Patrick and his group.

Tuesday was the first fishing day for German visitor Ulrich Benz and his wife Tanja. We boated 13 hard fighting pike on the day with a 90cm one being the biggest.

The cold spell after that sort of hampered the fishing a lot and the pike were hard to find and catch. A few small ones every day was all that could be achieved on two days that felt like November days in the middle of June, with only 8 degrees C in the afternoon!!!

On Saturday fly fishing enthusiast Cuan had a nice fish on the fly nearly straight away that morning, which gave a good account of himself.

There is still no stable weather in sight, but unless the temeratures don't fall as low as last week again, the prospects for pike fishing should be ok.

May update - Prime pike time!

The last two weeks were really exciting up here, with several groups of anglers enjoying their stay in Boyle and some fantastic fishing too.

First of were regular guests Stefano and Roberto from Italy who caught over 40 pike with spinning methods during their three day trip.

Then last week we were guiding international journalists Henning Stuehring from Germany and Gernot Heigl from Austria to do some fly-fishing for pike. They were here for five days of fishing, which they will report on later on in an article in the German magazine "Fisch & Fang". They also filmed some fine footage of the weeks fishing. The week started off on a High, when fly-fishing enthusiast Gernot hooked and landed his first meter pike nearly straight away on the first day of their trip. Many smaller fly-caught pike followed during the week both from boats and also while fishing from belly-boats (float-tubes).

Meanwhile a group of 4 anglers from France also started their weeks fishing with all of the anglers getting pike into the boats. The week culminated however, when on the third day Jean-Yves hooked and landed what turned out to be the biggest fish of the season so far! Well Done to Jean-Yves and also to our guide Brendan for boating such a cracking fish!
The Beauty measured 107cms and weighed in at exactly 28lbs.
This was a nice early Birthday present for the French angler who celebrated his Birthday the next day. On the same day we also boated pike of 97, 92 and 76 cms plus an amount of small pike, providing some great fishing for the group on their first ever trip with us.

March update - Pike fly action

With the spawning process of the pike being underway on many waters now, we still managed to find a venue with relatively cold water, where pike were still feeding.

A half day session of fly fishing for pike with a local guest yielded sixteen pike up to mid-double figures to the boat.

Earlier on during the week US guest Jason Scalise from Arizona had an enjoyable day with us catching a few pike on spinning tackle on a gorgeous spring day.

Pike have started to spawn in many lakes and the current coldspell has slowed things down a bit since. Despite this we were out yesterday morning and boated six pike on the fly.

New year finally started!

After a long break (too long!) from fishing we are back on the water again. The first few pike (and even a trout) were caught last week and yesterday fishing team partner Brian Rush really kicked things off, when he boated himself some cracking pike, with the biggest of 21lbs 2oz. All fish came to Buster jerks in relatively shallow water. Well Done, Brian!

Winter has truly set in here in Boyle with plenty of snow and freezing conditions. This morning I read -13C on the thermometer, and colder still during the night!

I would like to thank everybody who fished with us during 2010; we look forward to seeing many of you again during next season and of course we also hope to see some new faces too.

Hope next season will bring many fish and big ones too to all you angling enthusiasts, wherever you might wet a line!

More big pike!

The big pike are really on the move now. Yesterday we boated a nice Meter pike with an approximate weight of twenty pound. During the week some very scrappy double figure pike turned up too. Long may this sort of fishing last! The water temperature is still around 10 degrees and the pike are feeding. During a local pike competition on Lough Gara yesterday a fish of over thirty pound was caught and released.

We Just finished a very enjoyable week guiding two of our regular german guests, Martin and Wolfgang on various waters in the region. Fishing has been slower than expected throughout the last six days, but nevertheless they caught some pike every day. Sadly, what would have been the biggest fish of the week, or possibly even of the year, threw the lure back when it lunged out of the water, revealing all of it's size and glory. On one of the pics below is all what's left of the Magnum Bulldawg and the memory for Martin who had it on for about 15 seconds and clearly could see the fish before it's departure. Anyway they had an enjoyable week and are allready vowing to return next year!

Fishing update

The past few weeks have been pretty good as far as pike fishing here goes.
Good numbers of pike have been caught on most days allthough there were a few days early last week were things had slowed down somewhat.
Last week we had Tomek and Pawel here in Boyle who won the prize of a weeks fishing here, courtesy of Angling Services Ireland and Abbey House B&B during this years edition of Predatortour.
The two nice lads from Poland now living in Limerick braved out a few tough days but managed to catch a few pike every day along with good numbers of perch and they finished the week with good action catching over 20 pike on their last day. Sadly the biggest one of their week got away, when Pawel hooked up with a big pike on Thursday; but he got the lure thrown back at him when the fish which looked well over a meter showed himself in all its glory and became airnborne. The two avid anglers also demonstrated their love for fishing and are clearly conscious of the importance to practice "Catch & Release" with all pike.
Meanwhile we continued to catch some cracking pike up to low doubles on the fly last week, getting over ten fish per boat on most days.

On Saturday we helped out at Lough o'Flynn were the Inland Fisheries Ireland had a fisheries awareness day for kids and families. The younsters were brought out on the lake and many did indeed catch a few fish, making the day a great success for all involved. More on that later...

Discover Boyle Day on Sunday was also a great success with good attendance and interest shown on the day. It goes to show what can be achieved with some positive input and iniative.
Failte Ireland, Waterways Ireland and Roscommon County Council should indeed be commended for backing this event and equally everybody who worked so hard to put it all together.

Discover Boyle Day - Sunday October 3rd

103cm on the fly!

Yes, finally as expected the bigger fish are starting to show. This morning we had fantastic sport fly-fishing for pike, which culminated in the capture of a 103 cm pike estimated to weigh around 20lbs. 10 smaller fish also readily came to the boat. Water temperature has dropped to 14-15 degrees C.

Good pike action

Apart from one or two bad days, the pike fishing has been great this last few weeks with catches of between 10 -20 pike per boat per day on some occasions. On top of that we also had some nice perch as a bonus catch.
The big pike should start showing up any time soon!!

Autumn Pike season started!

Finally we could wait no longer and have started this autumn season last weekend.

The first morning session brought 10 pike to the boat, biggest 92cm. All fish came to Buster jerks, we also had a lot of missed takes. Nice start of the autumn season and things are looking good. The rain of the last few days topped the system up nicely, let's just hope there won't be too much more for a while.

Pike Fishing holidays in Boyle

The end of summer is drawing near and with that it also won't be all that long before the September pike fishing will kick off again. So far at least,it doesn't look as that there will be any delay because of very hot weather.

July update

The summer is fully upon us now and despite the fact that the weather isn't all great, the water temperature has risen to a level that makes pike fishing not only slow, but also very uncomfortable for the pike to get caught in.
Nevertheless our most recent pike outing two weeks ago was a successfull one for clients Mike Dolan and his son Sam from New York state. During a rather windy day, well it had been windy all week and the water was well oxygenated and only at ~17degrees; they caught 14 pike between them. All on suspending lures near weed. No real big ones were caught but some feisty pike came to the boat all the same.
On their return to New York Mike wrote:

"Bodo, I would like to thank you for the great day of fishing we had even with all the wind. Me and Sam are still talking about it. When we return to Ireland we will fish with you again. Mike"

Well it is surely nice to get some positive feedback. Meanwhile we have been doing some vertical fishing for perch with some good results at times, though it can be hard at the moment to find really concentrated shoals.
Also on offer this time of the year is fairly good trout fishing in both river and lakes, where good fly hatches take place particularly in the evenings and great sport can be had on the dry fly.

Fishing in the last few weeks has been fairly good, of course the really warm days were not very good for pike fishing. Swiss angler Thomas Egger was fishing with us in the second week of June and had some good fishing on some of the days with over 20 fish to the boat. Other days yielded fewer fish. Biggest fish of the trip was 98cm.

The pike are still very active in some of our lakes here and fight really hard right now.
Italian anglers Guido and Stefano had some good action during the week with a lot of small and some nice medium size pike. A few of the bigger variety hit the lures really hard too, but didn't connect right. But I guess they'll be there for again.
As we will be out most days during the week we will update this again soon.

Fishing Update

Despite the cool North-East winds the pike fishing is now getting pretty hot.
We were out this morning early and a short session yielded some beauties of 24lbs and 10lbs. Several other pike attacks were missed, so it looks like they are getting hungry.
Best lure today once again was the Strike Pro X-Buster. Photos will follow soon.

Fishing update - April 30th.

We were out on one of the local lakes this morning, water temperature today is 12.3C.
Only a few small fish to 5lbs. showed up taking jerk baits. The x-buster in perch colour worked best today.
Coarse fishing in the Boyle River is currently getting better with visiting anglers reporting bags of 20-30lbs. per session. Mainly roach and hybrids are being caught but an occasional bream up to 5lbs. was amongst the catches.

Predatortour 2010 - Lough Derg, Ireland

It is now only 2 and a half weeks to go til this years leg of Predatortour kicks off on Loug Derg.
I am looking forward to once again participate in this European Open Predator Competition.
This year I am joined by well-known Enniskillen pike angler Matt Dean, as we will represent the Irish Angler/ Dennett Outdoor Team there.

Spring fishing hotting up!

As the water temperatures in local lakes and rivers rise (currently between 9 and 13.5 degrees Celsius) the pike are beginning to be more active.
Spawning is now more or less completed in most waters and the pike are getting hungry.
The first flurry of activity saw us catching good numbers of small to medium sized pike, but a few better fish are also starting to show. I am looking forward to keep you updated here as always, but particularly over the coming weeks, as the month of May usually presents some great pike fishing in Ireland.....

Lough Ree International Pike Festival 14-16th April

The first Lough Ree International Pike Festival is set to take place in April. Many attractive prizes are waiting for the winners of this 3 day boat angling competition. The prize for the winner of this major event is Euro 3000
Lough Ree is home to some huge pike and indeed some real monsters can be caught there.
In a media test competition last October the winning fish caught by Mark Barrett of Anglers Mail, UK, weighed over 24lbs. just to give you an idea.

It is also worth while to mention that conservation measures have been put into place and the format of the event is a " Catch, Photo, Release" format, where the pike caught can be released immediately after being photographed and measured. No holding or transport of fish is required.

The organisers should be commended for adapting such conservationally minded approach to this competition.

The milder weather over the past week or so has warmed up the water in many lakes. The pike have stared to move into the shallows and started to spawn in some waters.

Season starting!

After what was (and partly still is) an unusually cold winter, we finally managed to get out and boat the first few pike of the year. No monsters as yet, but at least some double figures.

A half days fishing yesterday yielded 7 pike on lures with two of them over the 10lbs. mark. and three more just below it.

Not too bad considering it's still pretty cold nd the water temp currently is only at 3.9 degree Celcius. Allthough this looks to drop again during the week as another cold spell with sharp frost is promised.

Anyway the duck is broke the season is started and we are optimistic that soon lots more action will follow.

Floods!

Just when things where going great, somebody seems to have forgotten to turn off the tap.
Yes, it's been raining here for the last two weeks nearly everyday and waterlevels in the whole system are higher than I ever seen them before and a lot of venues are totally flooded!
All the fresh water has also cooled down our lakes and rivers by several degrees and the water temperature in many place is only at around 6 degrees Celsius and this also has resulted in the pike fishing somehow deteriorating over the last week. Having said that for those who want to brave the elements there is scope to pick up some big pike still. Deadbaiting in particular has yielded some good results for anglers in the region.

Big Fish Time!

Regular guests Gerd, Wolfgang, Michael and Martin from Germany were once again over for a five day trip with Angling Services Ireland. Despite the terrible weather conditions and the fast rising waterlevels of the past week the group had some great fishing with a number of big pike caught during their fishing days with guide Bodo Funke. Biggest of the week was Wolfgangs cracking fish weighing 25 lbs.

Michael had one of 23lbs. Guide Bodo also produced a fish of about 22lbs, measuring 107cm.

These great twenties were followed by a number of good doubles and smaller fish.

The guys were once again great fun to be out with and really showed extreme perseverance under the adverse conditions. It goes to show that it pays to be patient and stick it out.

Good Autumn Fishing

Sorry for the delay in getting this update, but thankfully we were busy fishing over the past week or so.

Despite the very changeable weather and the occasionally atrocious conditions the fishing over the past few weeks was pretty good with a lot of good fish getting caught by our clients and elsewhere in the region.

Last week we had Nathy Gilligan and his friend George Palmer, both living in Mayo, out on a long promised guided trip. After a very wet and slow start, the day improved somewhat with Pike up to 17lbs coming to their lures.

Next up we had Don Teaff from North-Carolina, USA out for a day fly fishing for pike with guide Bodo Funke. The pike were really up for it that day smashing into our pike flies fished on floating lines. Don had 10 pike with two of them being double figure fish weighing 16 and 19.5lbs.

The water temperature on most lakes in the region is between 11 and 12.5 Celsius at the moment while the weather is still very mild.

Autumn approaching - The Pike are calling!

Autumn is approaching and with the cooler nights it won't be long now till the pike fishing starts to pick up in earnest. Even though the summer here never really materialised, instead of hot weather and warm water temperatures we had to put up with constant rain, strong winds and flooded angling venues.

So I can't wait now to get stuck in some proper pike fishing, let's hope the weather will be kind and that this will be good season. Watch this space.....
